Everything about the campsites budget-friendly in Cirque de Gavarnie

Good news for your budget: there is no charge to see the Cirque de Gavarnie. You walk in freely from the village, and the only cost is the car park. This giant of the Pyrenees, at the heart of the National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, draws around 650,000 visitors a year to Gavarnie-Gèdre. To enjoy it without breaking the bank, the trick is to stay a little lower down, in Luz-Saint-Sauveur or the Argelès-Gazost valley, where the campsites in our selection offer pools, entertainment and weekly rentals for far less than a hotel at the foot of the cirque.

The Luz area: twenty minutes from the cirque

Four of our five campsites are around Luz-Saint-Sauveur, about twenty kilometres from Gavarnie. The best equipped is the Airotel Pyrénées: a four-star site with 135 pitches on 2.5 hectares, including 71 rentals between mobile homes, chalets and apartments. Three heated pools, one of them covered, a balneo area with spa, sauna and hammam, a multisport ground, a gym and entertainment in season: enough for rainy days. Open from 7 May to 20 September 2026, it offers weekly deals for two: watch for them when bookings open in December.

Higher up, in Sazos, Pyrénévasion belongs to the Sites et Paysages network. Its 99 pitches of around 100 m² all have water, electricity and drainage, and about twenty chalets, mobile homes and cottages for 4 to 7 people are air-conditioned. The indoor pool is heated to 30 °C, with a jacuzzi and hydromassage benches, plus an outdoor pool and a paddling pool. Open from 10 April to 7 October 2026, with views over the valley as a bonus.

Simpler and often cheaper, two three-star sites complete the choice. Le Hounta, in Sassis, 1 km from the centre of Luz, has 80 shady pitches along a gave, more than twenty mobile homes and a chalet, from 1 May to 30 September. So de Prous, in Saligos, between the Col du Tourmalet and Gavarnie, offers pitches, mobile homes and rooms, with a pool.

The Argelès-Gazost valley: a base to see everything

In Lau-Balagnas, the Lavedan, a Yelloh! Village that has welcomed campers for almost forty years, is further from the cirque, but at the crossroads of the roads to Gavarnie, Cauterets and the Pic du Midi. It accepts holiday vouchers, including the Connect version. It is the right choice for a stay packed with day trips, with Lourdes nearby.

Our tips to pay less

Come in June or September: prices drop, the trails empty and the light on the walls is finer. Set off early: the main path is 7.9 km there and back from the village, about 2.5 hours’ walk for 226 metres of ascent, and arriving before 9 am avoids the crowds. Choose a bare pitch if you have a tent: it is the cheapest option, especially at the three-star sites. Compare rentals: a campsite chalet for four often costs less than two hotel rooms. To sleep as close as possible to the village, see also our page on camping in Gavarnie, or our selection in Cauterets, another valley an hour from the cirque.

What to see and do in Cirque de Gavarnie

Once there, much is free: the walk to the foot of the 422-metre great waterfall, the view of the Brèche de Roland, the quieter neighbouring cirques of Troumouse and Estaubé, or the Col du Tourmalet in summer. The cirque’s walls rise almost 1,700 metres and peak at 3,248 metres at the Casque du Marboré. Just bring a picnic and good shoes.

our method

How we select every campsite

1

A verified criterion, not a promise

Every budget-friendly campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.

2

Reputation, backed by reviews

We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.

3

Direct booking, transparent pricing

You book directly with the campsite, no middleman or hidden markup. The price shown is the price you pay.
